DORA PENGA Rugs & Carpets is a traditional, family-owned company that embraces a sound yet innovative business strategy. Its people value carpets not just for their materials and craftsmanship, but also for their symbolic meaning.

Thus, handmade rugs can be cultural goods, works of art, the product of exceptional craftsmanship, aesthetic luxury, or even a point of social reference. A handmade rug expresses our personal elegance. A nomadic Jajim Kilim can be an expression of an adventurous nature, of the desire to escape and wander. A rare tapestry can be the expression of a cosmopolitan character.

We crisscross the Orient in search of authentic treasures. Retail is the final stop on a journey of constant exploration and creative restlessness. It is the passing of the torch to our customers, so that they may begin their own journey in the land of adventure, of discovery, and of true oriental luxury.

OUR STORE

The central retail outlet for ΝΤΟΡΑ ΠΕΓΚΑ Rugs & Carpets is located, since 1990, at no. 19 Proxenou Koromila Street in Thessaloniki, Greece. Previously, the family had stores in the city’s old commercial centre, on Agiou Mina, Ermou, Fragkon, Stefanou Tatti, Prasakaki and Vasilissis Olgas streets; throughout the years, we have kept up with the retail market trends in Thessaloniki. At the same time, depending on the state of the country’s economy, retail outlets were established in Kolonaki and Halandri in Athens, on Mykonos island, and in Thermi, Thessaloniki.

But the store on Proxenou Koromila Street was always the headquarters of the company’s business. This is where all major decisions are made; this is where the merchandise is unloaded when it arrives from the furthest reaches of the orient; this is where important deals are made for sales not just to Greece but to all of Europe, with a focus on our friends and customers from the neighbouring Balkan countries. Finally, this is where you will encounter the rarest pieces that make up the renowned collection of DORA PENGA Rugs & Carpets. A visit to the store on Proxenou Koromila is a fascinating journey into the world of handmade rugs and, by extension, the magic of Central Asia.

DORA PENGA’S BOOK

floral big

« The 370-page volume, the result of 10 years of research and extensive field work, is out. Under the title Rugs of the Orient, this book is a landmark in Greek scientific research on woven textiles and rugs. At the same time, with its 265 photographs, it is the most complete guide for non-professional readers and buyers who seek well-documented and complete information on handmade rugs in Greek.
The book’s author has been professionally active in the trade of handmade oriental rugs for many years; she has made countless journeys to the lands where the rugs are manufactured and conducted long-term research among the populations that used to create them, and those who still do. Gathering the results of her research, classifying and recording them, and highlighting the author’s experience in conjunction with the relevant international literature has been an extensive and time-consuming project; the result is this exceptional publication.
We are confident that this book, the product of experience, research, and the author’s deep practical knowledge, covers a large void in the Greek bibliography. Firstly, it provides to the thousands of Greek enthusiasts of oriental rugs a useful tool that will help them assess the offerings on the Greek market. Secondly, to those who love the Orient, it offers an opportunity to vicariously follow the historic and geographical movements of its populations and tribes, and to study its amazing cultures. Finally, it will serve as an important aid in the comparative study of contemporary Greek carpet-weaving and shall contribute to its reorganisation, if ever the conditions are ripe for its development.»
